I am a very ambitious c++ developer who recently relocated to sydney a year back and has been looking for a job since then!! I hope, someday soon I can become like one of those respected Software Engineers in the industry you mentioned about!!

Good point, Tucker. Some companies have very restrictive employment agreements where they try to own anything you produce regardless of when, where, or how you produce it. That’s not the type of company I ever want to work for. Thankfully, I live in California where we have a law that specifically deals with that sort of nasty behavior. As long as I don’t use company resources, anything I develop on my own time belongs to me.

Great post Josh – it helped motivated me to finally start my own blog on software development. One thing to be cautious of is to make sure that as an employee, you are legally able to write/sell software outside of the company.

Good list!, I find myself being on the same path since I started with Flash development 10 years ago, sadly sometimes the work takes away the motivation.

Also it seems like you have to have it in you from the beginning, had tried to get some friends into it without luck, as Keith says, doing what you love makes thins easier

Really couldn’t have said it better myself. the only thing I would add to the first point is do what you love. If you love graphics or audio or video, or interface design, or whatever, don’t be afraid to dive deep into it. It’s a lot easier to stick to something when you really enjoy it. Of course, don’t be afraid to try new things too. you might find something else you love.
